TALUQAN, Afghanistan, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Taliban fighters' attempts to overrun Taluqan city, the capital of the northern Takhar province, have been foiled and the militants retreated after leaving 28 bodies behind, an official said Tuesday.

The Taliban militants, according to an army spokesman in the beleaguered city Abdul Hadi Nazari, were planning to storm Taluqan city from different directions but the ground troops backed by fighting planes targeted the militants around the city on Monday, forcing them to retreat after leaving 28 bodies behind and 17 more injured.

The Taliban has not made a comment on that yet. The militants are reportedly in control of all the 16 districts' centers of Takhar province and have been fighting over the past one month to capture the provincial capital Taluqan city, 245 km north of Kabul.

In the meantime, a number of Takhar residents have staged a sit-in in Kabul over the past one week, calling on the central government to send more troops to Takhar, otherwise the province including the provincial capital would be taken by the Taliban. Enditem
