Turkish police detain 39 suspects over bootleg alcohol production: media

ISTANBUL, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police on Wednesday detained at least 39 people across the country for producing and selling fake alcohol, local media reported.

Police teams have intensified their operations against the suspects after 44 people have died and 50 others have been hospitalized after consuming bootleg alcohol in eight provinces since Friday.

At least 10 people were arrested in several raids on fake liquor manufacturers in Turkey's biggest province Istanbul, where seven people have died, the Sabah daily said.

Police also conducted similar operations in numerous other provinces, such as Adana, Malatya, Balikesir, Mersin, and Mugla, the daily added.

In the western province of Izmir, which recorded a total of 18 death, police forces have so far detained 14 people in operations, according to press reports. At least 34 people are still in critical condition in hospitals in the city. Enditem
