BELGRADE, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Serbia's agricultural sector aims to boost cooperation with China in such fields as the production of wine, spirits, berries and cereals, said Veljko Jovanovic, director of the Agriculture Department of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia (PKS), on Wednesday.

Jovanovic spoke at an online agricultural fair attended by officials and company representatives from eastern China's Shandong Province and European countries, according to a statement posted on the PKS's website.

Jovanovic said Serbia is a strong player in the agricultural sector in the Balkan region. Last year, the sector's trade surplus exceeded 1.3 billion euros (1.57 billion U.S. dollars).

He invited Chinese companies to invest in Serbia's agricultural and food industry, recalling that hundreds of kilometers of roads are currently being built in Serbia to connect production units in the country, and companies from China are also participating in these infrastructure development projects.

Jovanovic said Serbia's agricultural sector had shown its strength during the COVID-19 crisis, when some countries faced food shortages, while Serbia continued to export sugar, flour and cereals.

According to him, Serbia is the third largest producer of raspberries and soybean in Europe; the second largest producer of plums and the tenth largest producer of corn in the world; and it is one of the leading regional exporters of apples to Russia. Enditem
