BUCHAREST, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Moldova reaffirmed on Tuesday its determination to consolidate its European path, while Romania pledged to be its staunch supporter in a joint declaration signed by the presidents of the two neighboring countries in Chisinau, capital of Moldova.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis arrived in Chisinau on Tuesday, the first visit by a head of state to Moldova after Maia Sandu was sworn in as its president on Dec. 24.

The joint declaration also underlined the commitment of both countries to continue cooperation projects.

"We are starting a new stage in bilateral cooperation, a high-level friendship between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, which will benefit the citizens of both states and will contribute to building a better future," Sandu told a joint press conference after their meeting.

In addition to continuing to provide medicines and protective medical equipment to fight the epidemic, Iohannis said at the press conference, Romania has prepared a new support package for Moldova, which would include up to 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

According to him, Romania would also send a team of experts to prepare the vaccination strategy in Moldova.

The visit will provide "the framework for sending a strong message of support for the new President of the Republic of Moldova, at a historic moment for the European course of the neighboring country," said the Presidential Administration in Bucharest earlier when announcing the visit.

Sandu defeated then incumbent President Igor Dodon who was seeking re-election in the second round of presidential election on Nov. 15, becoming the first female president of Moldova. Enditem
