VALLETTA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Enterprises in Malta across all economic activities registered high levels of internet use during 2020 compared to the previous year, the country's statistics office revealed on Monday.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) said that internet use for business purposes increased by 10 percent last year over 2019. It said more than 60,000 employees used the internet for business purposes. Over half of them accessed the internet through mobile phone devices provided by their employer.

The NSO said a survey on ICT usage and e-commerce in enterprises revealed that 97.5 percent of companies employing 10 or more people used the internet during 2020, while 83.2 percent of enterprises had their own website, six percentage points higher than the EU average.

The national data showed that cloud computing has been continuously increasing in popularity, with 1,164 enterprises (52.7 percent) making use of this on-demand service. The most common forms of cloud computing used by enterprises were e-mail, finance or accounting software applications.

In 2020, the total turnover generated through e-commerce sales amounted to 2.1 billion euros (2.55 billion U.S. dollars), a year-on-year increase of 6.4 percent from a year earlier. Enditem
