MOSCOW, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Federal Security Service said Saturday it has caught a Ukrainian diplomat red-handed receiving classified information from a Russian citizen.

Aleksandr Sosonyuk, a consul of Ukraine in Russia's second largest city St. Petersburg, was detained when he was meeting a Russian citizen on Friday to obtain classified information about Russian law enforcement agencies, the security agency said in a statement.

Sosonyuk's activity was incompatible with his diplomatic status and was clearly hostile towards Russia, the agency said, adding that measures will be applied to him in accordance with norms of international law.

According to media reports, Sosonyuk has returned to the Consulate General in St. Petersburg following several hours in detention, and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry was planning to recall him. Enditem
