France's Renault targets 400,000 clean units per year with new electric hub

PARIS, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Renault, France's second largest automaker, on Wednesday announced the creation of an "ElectriCity" in northern France to bolster its offer of environmentally-friendly units.

The new legal entity brings together Renault sites in northern France to create "the largest and most competitive electric vehicle production centre in Europe" with an ambition of 400,000 cars per year by 2025, said Renault in its press release.

Renault ElectriCity would also contribute to the creation of 700 direct jobs spread across the various sites by 2025, and a university and training centre, it added.

Renault Group calls its brand "the electrical leader in Europe." In 2020, Renault sold 115,888 electric vehicles in Europe, twice as much as in 2019, while its worldwide sales went down 21.3 percent in a global automobile market that declined by 14.2 percent due to the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.
