28.9 pct of Greece's population at risk of poverty in 2020: statistics

ATHENS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reported on Tuesday that 28.9 percent of Greece's population faced the risk of poverty or social exclusion based on its 2020 survey on income and living conditions of households.

That translated to a total of 3,043,869 persons with reference income period 2019, it noted.

In 2009, when the Greek debt crisis started, the respective figure was 27.6 percent.

According to ELSTAT, 56.1 percent of non-European Union nationals older than 18 and residing in Greece were at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

In 2020, the average equivalised annual income per person was 9,993 euros (11,891 U.S. dollars) in Greece, up 6.5 percent year-on-year. In 2009, the respective figure was 13,896 euros. (1 euro= 1.19 U.S. dollar) Enditem
