JERUSALEM, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Air Force carried out airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday night, saying the attack was "a response" to a rocket fired earlier from the Palestinian enclave at southern Israel.

An Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that war jets and an attack helicopter struck an underground infrastructure belonging to Hamas in the southern Gaza Strip.

There were no immediate reports about casualties on both sides.

The spokesperson said that the rocket from Gaza was intercepted by the anti-rocket Iron Dome system. No group in Gaza has so far claimed responsibility for firing the rocket.

The rocket was fired a few hours after the Israeli military announced that "a terror tunnel" crossing from the Palestinian enclave into southern Israel had been discovered. Enditem
