BAGHDAD, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Four Katyusha rockets hit the heavily fortified Green Zone in central the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Tuesday, the Iraqi military said.

The rockets were fired from the al-Amin neighborhood in eastern Baghdad and targeted the zone, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a brief statement.

Earlier, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua that at least three rockets hit the Green Zone at night without giving further reports about casualties.

The attack prompted the anti-missile weapons to fire back on the rockets, while sirens were heard in the zone, which houses some of the main Iraqi government offices and the U.S. embassy, according to the source.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops across Iraq, as well as the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone, have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.

U.S. troops have been deployed in Iraq to support the Iraqi forces in the battles against the Islamic State militants, mainly providing training and advising to the Iraqi forces. Enditem
