JERUSALEM, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israel and Morocco signed a "historic" agreement on Wednesday that would enable defense cooperation, weapons trade and intelligence sharing, according to the Israeli defense ministry.
The memorandum of understanding lays foundations for cooperation in the fields of intelligence, industrial collaboration, and military training, the ministry said in a statement.
"The agreement provides a solid framework that formalizes defense relations between the countries and establishes a foundation that will support any future cooperation," the statement read.
Israel described the deal as "a significant step in the deepening relations" with Morocco.
The signing ceremony in Morocco's capital Rabat was attended by Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz and his Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Loudiyi.
The cooperation comes less than a year after Morocco normalized ties with Israel in a U.S.-brokered deal.
In August, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid travelled to Morocco for a first visit by Israel's top diplomat since 2003. Enditem
