Construction of the first line began in 2002 and ended in 2010, when field testing began. The line is slated to be opened to the public in August 2011. During construction, the project has been criticized locally for the numerous delays, poor financial management, generating air and noise pollution, and internationally for passing through parts of eastern Jerusalem. The controversial light rail system, initiated in 2002, has been riddled with delays following political, structural and economic setbacks. Construction of the first line began in 2002 and ended in 2010, when field testing began. The line is slated to be opened to the public in August 2011. During construction, the project has been criticized locally for the numerous delays, poor financial management, generating air and noise pollution, and internationally for passing through parts of eastern Jerusalem.
