UNITED NATIONS, June 8 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a cleaner and greener approach for development when participating in a bike ride near the United Nations headquarters on Friday afternoon, in light of the forthcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development.

Ban made the remarks when he showed up at the start of the United Nations Bike Ride to promote Sustainable Low Carbon Urban Transport and rang a large bicycle bell to send the riders off.

"Bicycles are just a part of a bigger picture of our global efforts to achieve a truly sustainable development. Our challenge is to get the world to use renewable energy to power our trains, buses, planes and boats," the UN chief said.

He noted that the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which will run from June 20-22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a chance to agree on how to build the future, which should be "more equitable, more prosperous and more respectful of our planet's limitations and limited resources."

The event was organized by the Netherlands Mission to the UN. Participants included ambassadors of the member states of the UN, high UN officials and NGO representatives.
