Ji keliang, the honorary chairman of Moutai Group, attended a press conference yesterday along with other company executives and important figures from relevant regulators to rebut a wide circulating rumor of excessive plasticizer found in Moutai Liquor.

Kweichou Moutai, one of China’s leading liquor makers, has these days seen itself embroiled in contaminant rumors, just weeks after the reputation of Jiugui Liquor went pear-shaped for its plasticizer-tainted product.

The Group’s Chairman Yuan Renguo first voiced his appreciation to the whistle blower, a Sina-blogger named Shuijinghuang, for submitting samples of Moutai liquor for inspection, saying his act rings the alarm bell for a sound growth of the liquor industry.

However, Yuan insisted that the harm of plasticizer has been overrated and a certain ulterior motive was behind the recent media hype.

“Someone is taking advantage of the public concern over food safety to ignite panic among consumers.” Yuan said, ”a classic beggar-thy-neighbor conspiracy”.

Ji keliang, honored as the “Soul of Moutai”, admitted that he was “utterly stunned and frustrated” by the ongoing contaminant rumors, but he also pointed that some ambiguity exists in the recently issued document No. 551 by the Ministry of Health, saying it’s inappropriate to extend the universal standard to different types of liquor products.

”I’ve been doing this business for a very long time, I can’t think of anyone but lunatic that will use plasticizer in the production process” Ji said.
