7 rescued, 1 missing in cargo vessel sinking

FUZHOU, May 8(Xinhuanet)-- Seven people have been rescued and one remained missing by noon on Sunday after the cargo vessel foundered off the coast of the east China's Fujian Province Saturday, said local marine search and rescue center Sunday.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday when the vessel with a load of more than 800 tons of glass coming from eastern Jiangsu Province sank off the sea on its way to Southern GuangdongProvince owing to gale force winds, according to the city police department of Zhangzhou, where the shipwreck took place.

Seven of the crew of eight snatched life jackets and jumped into the sea to flee, but, Zheng Huiyu, who was fast asleep, sank with the vessel into the sea, said Zheng Huiping, captain of the boat and also Zheng Huiyu's younger brother.

The city's marine search and rescue center soon dispatched morethan 10 fishing vessels and rescued all but one victims.

All those rescued have been hospitalized and are now in stable condition. The chance of survival for Zheng Huiyu, nevertheless, is slim, according to the center. Enditem
