BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Universal Pictures' action movie "F9: The Fast Saga" has overtaken "Godzilla vs Kong," the new chapter in the cinematic monsterverse, to become this year's top-grossing foreign film at China's box office.

Wednesday saw the total revenue of the newest entry in the Fast and Furious franchise cross the 1.23-billion-yuan mark (about 192.87 million U.S. dollars) reached by the monsterverse production, data by box office tracker Maoyan shows.

"F9: The Fast Saga" now ranks third on China's 2021 box office chart, immediately followed by "Godzilla vs Kong." They are the only two foreign films that have so far made it into this year's top 10 earners.

Chinese comedies "Hi, Mom" and "Detective Chinatown 3" continued to lead the yearly sales chart, with total earnings of approximately 5.41 billion yuan and 4.52 billion yuan, respectively.

China's 2021 box office revenue reached 25.64 billion yuan as of Wednesday.
