The Shanghai International Film Festival, which gets under way Saturday, has set local film "Wheat" as its opening-night spectacular.

Directed by He Ping ("Warriors of Heaven and Earth"), "Wheat" is a high-profile historical action drama about the women left behind when men go off to war and the lies they're told to keep them from knowing the awful truth.

The film stars the ubiquitous Fan Bingbing alongside Wang Jue and Wang Zhiwen.

Produced for $6 million by Xian Film Studio, Beijing Polybona and his own company Beijing Classic Culture, the picture will be distributed locally through Polybona and is handled in overseas markets by Hong Kong-based Distribution Workshop.

The 12th edition of the festival, which runs through June 21, will screen 1,925 films and showcase more than 200 international premieres. Its main competition section will include 17 films from 16 territories and be judged by a jury headed by "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle.
