After years as a bottle blonde, Nicole Kidman has rediscovered her ginger roots.

The Hollywood actress flashed back to her early life as a natural red-head for a glamorous photoshoot on LA's Malibu beach for fashion bible Vogue.

She looked every inch an A-list star in a plum gown that hugged her sveltve figure before exploding out into a dramatic puff-ball fishtail.

The star kept her famous alabaster skin sheltered from the intense California sun under a period-style parasol throughout the shoot.

Nicole has long been a Vogue favourite having appeared on the cover numerous times during her 20-year career and most recently graced the front page in July to promote her film Australia.

The 41-year-old is back in America after spending time in Europe filming Nine with Daniel Day-Lewis earlier this year.

The pair shot scenes for the upcoming movie, which is about a film director suffering a mid-life crisis, both in London and Rome.

Since her Stateside return, Nicole has been spending time with her seven-month-old daughter Sunday Rose and husband Keith Urban, whom she accompanied to the Grammys on February 9.

However, she decided to sit out Keith's most recent public outing in an apparent effort to avoid an awkward encounter with her ex-husband Tom Cruise.

On Sunday, Keith performed a two-song set at the Daytona 500 International Speedway in Florida, which Tom attended as a guest of honour.

Both men attended the pre-race driver meeting at the event. The two were seated on opposite ends, but Tom heartily applauded Keith when the singer was introduced.

Next up, Nicole is scheduled to begin work on Need with her best friend and fellow Australian Naomi Watts.

The film centres on a New York therapist who discovers her suicidal patient is having an affair with her husband.
