Hitting the shops: The pair browsed boutiques in The Grove, Los Angeles

After a hard day hitting the shops, a tasty snack is a fitting way to get energy levels back up. But for little Suri Cruise, it was also rather messy.

The three-year-old tucked into a huge pastry while out with her mother Katie Holmes, but managed to get chocolate all over her face.

Katie chuckled at Suri's sheepish expression before carefully wiping her face clean with a hankie.

The pair were out browsing boutiques in The Grove shopping complex in Los Angeles.

Suri wore a typically adorable outfit, consisting of an orange off-the-shoulder summer dress and pink shoes.

It looked as if she will soon be adding more to her already impressive wardrobe.

When she wasn't encumbered by her chocolate croissant, the toddler clutched a bag of purchases.

Katie, 30, went for a more muted look, pairing a simple black strapless dress with a stylish green scarf and white handbag.

Katie has recently finished filming The Extra Man, which follows a failed playwright, played by Kevin Kline, who works as an escort for rich widows in New York before becoming a mentor to an aspiring writer.

The actress is soon expected to relocate to Melbourne, Australia, to shoot her new movie Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark.

In the remake of a classic Seventies thriller she will play a young woman who moves into an old house inhabited by malevolent, whispering creatures.

It is her first lead in a movie since marrying Tom Cruise, and she will begin filming in August.
