BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Relatives and neighbors were shocked at the sight of the old woman they had put in a coffin seven days previously walking around in her house and making herself dinner.
Li Xiufen, 95, a villager living alone in Beiliu of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was found "dead" by her neighbor on Feb. 17.
The neighbor, by the name of Chen, said he had found her on a bed neither moving nor breathing in the morning and thought she might have fallen asleep.
Chen dropped by later in the afternoon and found Li was still motionless and breathless. So, he believed she had passed away. He then told Li's relatives the bad news since she has no children.
After checking with a Chinese fortune teller, Li's relatives decided to bury her on Feb. 23 which was believed to be a good day for funeral.
However, villagers came on the morning of 23 to carry the coffin for funeral only to find it open wide and empty.
"We were extremely terrified at the time," Chen recalled the scene.
Having searched Li’s house, they found she was having a bowl of rice she had cooked for herself in the kitchen.
Li said all she remembered was that she had had a lot of dreams and then woke up hungry, so she found some rice and cooked it.
Li appears quite normal now in spite of relative slowness. Doctors say it might be suspended animation in Li's case.
