MADRID, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- An estimated 400,000 Madrid residents took to the streets on Sunday in support of the Spanish capital's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
Madrid is competing against cities of Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Chicago as the International Olympic Committee will choose the winner in Copenhagen on October 2.
With Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon and the General Director of the Madrid 2016 bid committee Mercedes Coghen departing for Copenhagen on Sunday, it was virtually the last chance for the citizens of the Spanish capital to show their support.
With the gathering point the famous Plaza Cibeles, the idea was to form a giant human mosaic with the statue of the Goddess Cibeles at its center.
The image in the mosaic was the logo for the Madrid 2016 bid - a hand which is decorated in the Olympic colors.
Traffic was cut and extra metro services were laid on for those attending. An photo of the mosaic was taken from a helicopter 19.30 hours and an hour later those attending were able to watch a free concert held by Spanish pop star David Bisbal.
