Macao to continue free, open economic policy: official
2006-02-23 00:26:43 Xinhua English
MACAO, Feb. 23(Xinhuanet)-- Tam Pak Yuen, Macao's secretary for Economy and Finance, said here on Thursday that the government of the special administrative region is to hold on its free and open economic policy.

Tam told the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the 19th Asian Trade Promotion Forum that Macao is"a firm believer" in free trade.

He said the total net exports of the region for years account for nearly 50 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

Macao, since its return to the motherland in 1999, has insisted on safeguarding and refining the free market system in a bid to enhance international trade and economic cooperation, said Tam.

He said the government has taken"an apt policy strategy of economic development," as the World Trade Organization has dubbed Macao's trade and investment regime one of the most open in the world arena.

Delegates from 16 of all the forum's 21 members participated in the two-day annual meeting.

The Asian Trade Promotion Forum was founded in 1987, with all the delegates respectively from their government-run trade promotion institutes. Enditem
