Google up a place in smartphone race

2010-05-21 07:40:01 GMT2010-05-21 15:40:01 (Beijing Time)

Google's Android takes fourth place in the first quarter in the numer of smartphones sold which use it.

Google has overtaken Microsoft in the smartphone market race and it's catching up on Apple's iphone.

More people have bought its Android operating handset during the first quarter than Microsoft's Windows mobile.

Research firm Gartner says Google is now the fourth most popular smartphone provider behind Nokia, Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

All top handset sellers, except Nokia, are now running - or planning to run - the Android operating system.

The global mobile phone market grew by 17 per cent during the first quarter.

But the world's largest handset maker Nokia has seen its share of the market fell.
