Strong quake hits off east coast of Honshu, Japan

TOKYO -- An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted off the east coast of Honshu, Japan Thursday at 23:58 local time (1458 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 24.20 km, was initially determined to be at 38.1730 degrees north latitude and 144.0398 degrees east longitude.
