Top Japanese leadership has approved a military operational plan to protect Senkaku Islands (Chinese Diaoyu Islands), the Sankei newspaper reported on Monday, citing sources with Japan Defense Ministry.

According to the plan, if foreign government vessels or fishing ships enter waters near Diaoyu Islands in deliberate provocation and Japan coast guards are unable to cope with the situation, Japan’s self defense forces can dispatch warships and carry out maritime military operations.

The Sankei report says General Shigeru Iwasaki, Chief of Joint Staff of Japan's Self Defense Forces, has ordered implementation of the plan.
