QUITO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador registered 2,727 new cases and 90 more deaths of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 384,589, with 13,570 fatalities.

Another 5,154 deaths are considered to be COVID-19 related, but not verified, according to the ministry.

The provinces of Pichincha, where the capital city of Quito is located, Guayas, and El Oro registered the highest numbers of new cases in the last day.

A three-day holiday began in the country on Friday to celebrate International Workers' Day, but citizens are prevented from traveling internally for tourism due to the state of emergency declared in 16 of the 24 provinces.

The measure, which came into force on April 23 and will end on May 20, includes a night curfew and total confinement on the weekend to stop the spread of infection and to avoid overloading the already strained hospital system.

The Ministry of Public Health is continuing to roll out its mass vaccination program, which began on Jan. 21.

The government is aiming to have distributed 1 million vaccines by Sunday.

According to the latest report from the ministry, as of April 28, 861,393 people have been vaccinated, with 633,421 having received the first dose and 227,972 having received both doses of vaccine. Enditem
