QUITO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador on Thursday reported 2,153 new COVID-19 infections and 29 more deaths in the last 24 hours, to bring the national counts to 436,023 and 15,390 respectively, said the Health Ministry.

Currently, 11 of the 24 provinces in Ecuador have high rates of contagion though restrictions have been in force nationwide to contain the spread of the virus.

Health Minister Ximena Garzon told reporters Thursday that the new government, which took office on May 24, is seeking to "control the pandemic that has gotten out of hand."

She indicated that the government is making efforts to accelerate the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines by getting touch with several pharmaceutical companies around the world.

She also said a new vaccination plan that has been running since May 31 aims to inoculate 9 million Ecuadorians in the first 100 days of the administration and to normalize economic and educational activities as soon as possible.

The previous government began the vaccination of health personnel, priority groups, and the elderly on Jan. 21, and more than 2 million doses of vaccine have been administered so far. Enditem
