Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.95 percent, at 3,576.9 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.23 percent higher at 14,932.39 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 863.2 billion yuan (about 133.7 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 917.52 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Most stocks gained, with stocks related to nonferrous metals and coal industry posting strong performance. Shares of Shanxi Coking Co. Ltd. rose by the daily limit of 10 percent to close at 7.57 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.04 percent to close at 2,997.75 points Wednesday. Enditem
