MADRID, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Real Sociedad remains top of La Liga after a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Granada on Sunday afternoon.

Granada arrived in San Sebastian with several first team players missing due to COVID-19. With just seven first-team players in their starting 11 and without coach Diego Martinez, they put up very little resistance against the league leaders who won thanks to a 21st minute goal from Nacho Monreal and a 26th minute penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal.

Both sides conserved their energy in the closing minutes, but there was further controversy as the visitors ended with just four first-team players on the pitch, when the minimum allowed is five.

Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler scored three penalties as Valencia stunned Real Madrid 4-1 in the Mestalla Stadium.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Real Madrid with an excellent finish, but Lucas Vazquez's handball gave Soler his first goal. Although Soler's original spot-kick bounced back off the post, he was able to retake it after VAR spotted a defender encroaching in the area.

Raphael Varane's own goal put Valencia ahead in the 45th minute before a clumsy challenge from Marcelo gave Soler the chance to score his second of the night, and Sergio Ramos' handball saw him complete a hat-trick of penalties.

It is the first time Real Madrid have conceded three penalties in a La Liga game and things got worse before the end when Benzema limped off with a possible groin injury.

Villarreal strikers Paco Alcacer and Gerard Moreno keep on scoring and both found the net in their side's 3-1 win away to Getafe. Alcacer opened the scoring in the 10th minute and although Mauro Aramabarri equalized in the 15th minute, Manu Trigueros put Villarreal back in front a minute later and Moreno sealed the win after an assist from Alcacer with half an hour left to play.

Real Valladolid coach Sergio Gonzalez will breathe easier after his side's 2-1 win at home to Athletic Bilbao. Fabio Orellana opened the scoring from the penalty spot after an error from Athletic keeper Unai Simon, and Marcos de Sousa doubled their lead two minutes into the second half.

Inaki Williams scored an 85th minute penalty for Athletic, but it was too late for them to salvage a point.

Levante and Alaves drew 1-1 with Lucas Perez putting Alaves ahead in the third minute and Jose Luis Morales equalizing in the 50th minute for Levante, who were unable to beat a rival that played for an hour after Alaves winger Edgar Mendez was sent off.

On Saturday, Lionel Messi came off the substitutes' bench to replace the injured Ansu Fati and help FC Barcelona to a 5-2 win at home to Real Betis on Saturday afternoon.

The Argentinian scored twice - once from the penalty spot - as well as setting up Antoine Griezmann and Sergi Roberto to score.

Ousmane Dembele put Barca ahead in the first half, but Antonio Sanabria equalized for Betis and Claudio Bravo saved Griezmann's penalty.

Griezmann then put Barca ahead early in the second half before Betis defender Aissa Mendi was sent off after handling Dembele's goal-bound shot.

Messi scored the resulting penalty, and although Loren Moron gave Betis hope, Sergi Roberto and Pedro assured Barca of their first win in five league games.

Atletico Madrid ended Cadiz's 100 percent start to the season with a 4-0 win in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, which saw Joao Felix continue his fine recent form two more goals.

Lucas Ocampos' 59th minute penalty gave Sevilla a 1-0 win at home to Osasuna to end a run of three consecutive defeats for Julen Lopetegui's side.

Huesca is still looking for its first win of the season after a 1-1 draw at home to Eibar, who took a first-half lead thanks to Esteban Burgos, only for Rafa Mir's second half header to equalize for Huesca.

Elche and Celta opened the round of matches with a 1-1 draw on Friday night.
