LAGOS, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's labor union is mobilizing for a nationwide protest on Wednesday over attempts by the National Assembly to pass a bill to whittle its power to represent workers nationwide.

The bill is an attempt to undermine Nigeria's working class, said Ayuba Wabba, president of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), in a statement on Tuesday.

According to local media on Tuesday, Nigeria's House of Representatives last week debated a bill which would decentralize future negotiations for minimum wage to states and weaken the power of the NLC to represent workers nationally.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari signed the National Minimum Wage Bill into law in April 2019, approving the 30,000 naira (about 79 U.S. dollars) national minimum wage after talks between the government and the labor union following an industrial action across the country in 2018. Enditem
