Gunmen attack police station in SE Nigeria: official

ABUJA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Gunmen numbering over 20 on Monday attacked a police station in Nigeria's southeastern state of Anambra, but no casualty was recorded, a spokesman for the police said.

Geoffrey Ogbonna, the spokesman for the police in Anambra, told reporters in the state capital Awka on Monday that the gunmen struck early in the morning at the zonal police headquarters in the Ukpor town of the Dunukofia local government area, but were repelled by policemen on duty.

He said no police equipment or firearmwas carted away during the attack.

No arrest has been made so far, as the gunmen fled after causing damage, Ogbonna told reporters.

According to him, the gunmen burned buildings, vehicles, and motorcycles belonging to police officers and others within the premises.

He further confirmed that the police have launched a search for the suspected arsonists. Enditem
