MEXICO CITY, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday expressed his support for U.S. President Joe Biden's proposed agenda for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, spurring the economy and dealing with immigration.

A day after Biden's inauguration, Lopez Obrador described relations with the new U.S. administration as "very good," and added he agreed with Biden's focus on controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus disease as a way to get the economy back on track.

"It is not the economic crisis only. What is causing the most damage is the COVID-19 pandemic," Lopez Obrador said during his daily press conference.

Referring to the 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars in fiscal stimulus the Biden administration intends to inject into the U.S. economy, Lopez Obrador said that was "also important."

On immigration, Lopez Obrador said Biden's strategy of regularizing the immigration status of foreign migrants residing in the United States would satisfy the needs of Mexicans.

"That is very good. We have nothing to object to, on the contrary, we agree that this must be done," said Lopez Obrador.

Some 38 million Mexicans are estimated to be living in the United States.

Biden was sworn in on Wednesday as the 46th president of the United States, succeeding Donald Trump, whose term in office was marked by combative immigration strategies, such as erecting a high wall along the border with Mexico and separating migrant children from their families. Enditem
