1st LD: "Godzilla vs. Kong" tops North American box office for third weekend in a row

LOS ANGELES, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. and Legendary's monster film "Godzilla vs. Kong" maintained its reign at the North American box office for the third weekend in a row without much in the way of competition.

"Godzilla vs. Kong" took in an estimated 7.7 million U.S. dollars from 3,001 theaters between Friday and Sunday, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

The film, which became the highest grossing film of the COVID-19 era in North America last week, has earned 80.51 million dollars in the region to date.

The film is the fourth entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise. In the film, the two iconic silver screen behemoths meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza Gonzalez and Julian Dennison.

Comscore data showed that the film added another 12.2 million dollars internationally this weekend for a whopping worldwide total of 390.2 million dollars.

The monster mash-up enjoyed huge box office success in China. According to the box office data compiled by Maoyan, a Chinese movie-ticketing and film data platform, the film took in more than 1,160 million yuan (around 177.8 million U.S. dollars) after 24 days of launch on the Chinese mainland.

In a distant second place, Universal's action thriller film "Nobody" hauled in 2.52 million dollars from 2,405 locations in its fourth weekend. The film has grossed 19.05 million dollars in North America for a global total of 34.51 million dollars to date.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller and starring Bob Odenkirk, the film follows an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband who helps a woman being harassed by several goons on a bus, only to become the target of a vengeful drug lord.

Sony's supernatural horror film "The Unholy" landed in third with 2.06 million dollars from 2,057 locations in its third weekend for a North American total of 9.56 million dollars.

Directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos in his directorial debut and starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Katie Aselton, William Sadler and Diogo Morgado, the film follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick.
