BANGKOK, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) of Central Thailand's Prachin Buri Province on Monday reported that a highway official was killed when a flash flood ravaged a forest park area, east of Bangkok on Sunday.

The department also reported that water runoff from mountains in the National Park raged through many districts in the province.

The force of rapid-moving water swept the body of the highway official 500 meters away from the tunnel, said the department.

He is believed to have drowned.

Also, a traffic tunnel traversing Thap Lan National Park also in Prachin Buri was temporarily closed due to heavy flooding triggered by hours of heavy rains since Saturday.

The tunnel submerged in one-meter-deep floodwater on Sunday but later reopened on Monday.

Heavy rain over the weekend also forced authorities on Sunday to close Highway 304 of Prachin Buri, linking the Northeast with Laem Chabang deep-sea port and industrial complexes in the area.

The department also said a park ranger barely escaped the flash flood to higher ground before being safely rescued on Monday morning.

Many houses in the province were completely swept away by the flash flood.

Local media also showed footage of properties of luxury resorts being damaged.

The department said that although typhoon Goni did not make landfall in Thailand, its effect and strength had already triggered continuous rain and flash floods, damaging households in 34 Thai provinces. Enditem
