JAKARTA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A baby white rhino, or Rhinocerotidae, was born at Indonesia's Taman Safari conservation agency in West Java province's town of Bogor, an official said on Monday.

The baby white rhino, born on Oct. 26, 2020 from mother Chuma and father Merdeka, was named Azsyifa, which means healer, Taman Safari Indonesia Group's Director Jansen Manansang said, adding that the baby mammal weighs 50 kg and is 50 centimeters tall.

"White rhino is one of the endangered animals, so our duty is to protect and preserve this species," said Manansang.

The mother feeds Azsyifa every 30 minutes, closely monitored by the medical team. Azsyifa also gets additional food such as nuts, carrots, leaves, bananas, and grass.

With the birth of Azsyifa, the Bogor Safari Park now has five white rhinos, including two males and three females.

The white rhino is one of the remaining megafaunas, which was listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Bogor Safari Park is the first conservation agency in Indonesia which now hosts more than 2,500 animals from various countries and regions, including a pair of giant pandas Cai Tao and Hu Chun from China. Enditem
