Gunmen kill 3 army personnel in W. Afghanistan

HERAT, Afghanistan, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Two unidentified armed men opened fire on a military vehicle in Afghanistan's western city of Herat on Wednesday, killing three on the spot, police said.

"Two unidentified armed men sprayed bullets on a military vehicle in Herat city at 7:00 a.m. local time, killing three, including an officer and two soldiers on the spot," provincial police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walizada told Xinhua.

The attackers escaped from the scene after the shooting, the spokesman added, noting that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, a source said on condition of anonymity that four more security personnel were injured in the attack.

The Defense Ministry has yet to make comments. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Targeted attacks have been rising in Afghanistan's big cities including the capital Kabul. At least four people, including two policemen and two judges, have been killed in targeted attacks in Kabul over the past week. Enditem
