Tokyo stocks open higher on positive U.S. jobs data

TOKYO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday as investor sentiment was bolstered by better-than-expected U.S. jobs data for February released late last week, which raised hopes about the pace of the broader global economic recovery.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 286.99 points, or 0.99 percent, from Friday to 29,151.31.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, rose 15.73 points, or 0.83 percent, at 1,911.91.

Mining, iron and steel, and oil and coal product-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
