Afghan gun battle kills 11 militants in western province

HERAT, Afghanistan, March 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 11 militants were killed as fighting flared up in Zawal district of the western Herat province on Monday, provincial government spokesman Jilani Farhad said.

The clash, according to the official, broke out early morning after a group of Taliban militants attacked security checkpoints in Zawal province, triggering a gun battle, which lasted for a while and the militants fled after leaving 11 bodies behind.

Farhad did not say if there were any casualties on security personnel.

The security forces also discovered 11 anti-vehicles mines and defused them, the official added.

Taliban militants are yet to make comments. Enditem
