ULAN BATOR, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia reported 148 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing its nationwide tally to 4,806, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Saturday.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 143 were detected in Ulan Bator, the country's capital and hardest-hit city, and the remaining five were reported in the northern province of Khuvsgul, the NCCD said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the center reported 55 recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,351.

Mongolia, with a population of 3.3 million, has so far recorded nine COVID-19 deaths since confirming its first case in March 2020.

The Asian country launched a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign late last month, aiming to cover at least 60 percent of its total population.

More than 189,900 people have been vaccinated so far, according to the country's health ministry. Enditem
