Blast kills district police in E. Afghanistan

SHARAN, Afghanistan, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A police district chief was killed and two others injured as a blast targeted a police van in Sar Hawza district of Afghanistan's eastern Paktika province on Wednesday, provincial police spokesman Shah Mohammad Arian has confirmed.

The Taliban militants launched massive offensive on checkpoints in Dewana Baba area of the restive district late Tuesday night, triggering heavy fighting which lasted for a couple of hours, the official said, adding that the district police chief Juma Khan was going to lead the war but a blast struck his van killing him on the spot and injuring two others.

Without providing more details, the official added that the police and the army would continue to ensure security in Sar Hawza and its vicinity.

Another blast which struck a mini-bus of health workers outside the capital city Kabul in the morning rush hours claimed one life and injured three others, police confirmed. Enditem
