Insider attack claims 4 lives in S. Afghanistan

TIRIN KOT, Afghanistan, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Four policemen have been confirmed dead in an insider attack that happened in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province on Saturday, provincial governor Mohammad Omar Shirzad confirmed on Sunday.

A Taliban infiltrator disguised himself as police opened fire on a police checkpoint outside provincial capital Tirin Kot on Saturday night, killing four policemen on the spot and escaped, the official said.

The official added that the security forces backed by fighting planes targeted the Taliban hideout within hour and killed the perpetrator along with four more insurgents.

Taliban outfit has yet to make comment.

Insider attacks in the past had also claimed the lives of Afghan security personnel.

Insider attacks on Afghan security forces have increased and reportedly more than 100 personnel had been killed and over 30 others wounded in the first quarter of the current year, local media reported. Enditem
