KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Rehabilitation and Rural Development has completed the work for building a water canal in the troubled Arghandab district of the southern Kandahar province, said a statement of the ministry released Thursday.
Constructed at a cost of 29 million afghani (371,800 U.S. dollars), the 5,167 meter-long canal which was inaugurated very recently, would benefit 23,800 individuals, the statement said.
According to the statement, the newly inaugurated canal could help farmers to irrigate 5,700 acres of land in the troubled Arghandab district.
The restive Arghandab district, which is famous for growing pomegranates and grapes, has been the scene of fierce fighting between government forces and Taliban militants over the past couple of years. (1 U.S. dollar equals 78 afghani) Enditem
