Former Turkish PM Mesut Yilmaz dies at 73

ISTANBUL, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Former Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz died Friday at a hospital in Istanbul at the age of 73 after suffering from lung cancer.

"Yilmaz lost the struggle he has been fighting for about two years against lung cancer and subsequent medical conditions," Ozgur Samilgil, chief of medicine at Florence Nightingale Hospital, said in a written statement.

Yilmaz had also undergone brain surgery in May.

He was the chairman of the Motherland Party and served three times as prime minister from 1991 to 1999.

Turkey's presidential office described Yilmaz as "one of the distinguished personalities of Turkish political life." Enditem
