ATHENS, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted the area off Greece's Samos island in the eastern Aegean Sea on Friday, according to the Institute of Geodynamics, national observatory of Athens.

Greek seismologists revised downwards an earlier estimate of 7.1 on the Richter scale given by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake lasted 15 seconds and was felt throughout a large part of the region across the Aegean to the mainland, the Greek scientists noted.

The tremor's epicenter was located about 16 kilometers northwest of Samos at a depth of some 10 kilometers, according to their initial estimates, Greek national news agency AMNA reported. Enditem
