LONDON, June 18 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's governing Conservative Party lost a House of Commons (lower house of the British parliament) seat in a by-election to the minority opposition party Liberal Democrats early Friday.

Liberal Democrats' candidate Sarah Green received 21,517 votes to win the Chesham and Amersham parliamentary seat, with a majority of more than 8,000 over the Conservative candidate Peter Fleet who came second with 13,489 votes.

Green Party candidate Carolyne Culver was third with 1,480 votes while Natasa Pantelic from the main opposition Labour Party netted 622 votes.

The by-election was called following the death of Conservative Cheryl Gillan who won the seat in 2019 with a majority of 16,223.

The Conservatives had held the constituency, in the county of Buckinghamshire to the north west of London, since it was created almost half a century ago.

The result will not dent Johnson's grip on power as his party holds a majority of around 80 seats in the House of Commons. Enditem
