BERLIN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- To increase funding for research on quantum computers, Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) said on Monday that it would invest around 40.1 million euros (45.8 million U.S. dollars) in a research network until 2024.

Led by the German-Finnish startup IQM, the network would develop a quantum computer based on superconductor circuits and integrate it into the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the BMBF said.

"The integration of a quantum computer into the infrastructures of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre holds enormous potential for science and industry," Federal Minister of Education and Research Anja Karliczek said.

"With the start of the project, we have reached the first milestone towards a competitive quantum computer 'made in Germany'," Karliczek said, adding that the "international race in the field of quantum technologies is in full swing."

The German government's economic stimulus and future development package would provide two billion euros for the promotion of quantum technologies, which include quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensors and basic technologies. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars) Enditem
