ANKARA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Turkish prosecutors issued on Tuesday detention warrants for 40 people, including military staff, over their alleged links to a network believed to be behind a failed coup attempt in 2016, semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.
The public prosecutor of capital Ankara issued warrants for 29 people, including 28 military officers and a civilian, in 10 cities across Turkey. The Turkish police detained 22 of them in security operations, said the prosecutor's office in a statement.
Separately, prosecutors in Turkey's western province of Balikesir issued warrants for 11 suspects in three Turkish provinces, including Istanbul, Izmir, and Balikesir, and three of them were detained, the local prosecutor's office said in a written statement.
On July 15, 2016, coup plotters blocked roads and bombed state institutions, including the parliament, before the attempt was thwarted.
The Turkish government accuses the U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen and his network of being behind the coup bid, in which 250 people were killed, and some 2,200 others injured.
