RIYADH, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The Saudi-led coalition involved in a war in Yemen announced on Thursday the interception of a ballistic missile launched by Houthis towards the Saudi Arabian border city of Jazan in the southwest, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Brigadier General Turki Al-Malki, the coalition spokesperson, was quoted as saying that the missile was intercepted by the Royal Saudi Air Force.

He accused the Houthi militia of committing war crimes by targeting civilians and civilian sites.

Earlier on Thursday, the coalition said it intercepted a bomb-laden drone targeting the Saudi border city of Khamis Mushait.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi rebels seized control of several northern Yemeni provinces and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

The Saudi-led coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in 2015 to support Hadi's government. Enditem
