6 arrested in south China cigarette smuggling bust

GUANGZHOU, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Coast guard authorities in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday said they have arrested six suspects and seized more than 200,000 cartons of smuggled cigarettes, involving over 26 million yuan (about 4 million U.S. dollars).

The coast guard officers busted the gang on Jan. 23 after receiving reports of a suspicious vessel in waters off the coast of Shenzhen City.

Further investigation is underway.

The Guangdong Coast Guard has vowed to step up patrols of waters under its jurisdiction and intensify its crackdown on smuggling and other crimes. Enditem
