Water transport accidents dive about 50 pct from 2012: ministry

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's water transport network saw fewer accidents in 2020 compared to 2012, falling 48.9 percent, a Ministry of Transport official said Thursday.

Cao Desheng, director of the maritime affairs bureau of the Ministry of Transport, told a press conference that the number of death and missing in such accidents dropped 29.2 percent from 2012, while the direct economic loss dived 48.9 percent.

Since 2012, maritime departments nationwide handled an average of about 400,000 arrivals and departures of international vessels.

Over 90 percent of foreign trade cargo and 40 percent of domestic cargo is transported via waterways in China, according to the ministry. Enditem
